West Culburra community engagement strategy commences

The first component of the Shoalhaven City Council-endorsed community engagement strategy for Sealark’s West Culburra development has commenced, with the distribution of a community newsletter and survey to gather insights on potential opportunities related to the project.

The community engagement strategy guides information sharing about the development and its progress as well as feedback opportunities to enable Sealark to better understand community, business and industry perspectives.

“In our consultation to date, community members have raised some interesting and creative ideas for us to consider in the delivery of West Culburra,” Sealark Managing Director – Land & Development Matt Philpott said.

“We look forward to hearing from people interested in the delivery of the new homes, town centre and other community amenities through the upcoming engagement activities,” he said.

At West Culburra, Sealark is delivering land for approximately 400 new homes, a mixed-use commercial and retail precinct, business premises, parks and reserves to bring greater housing choice, affordable homes, new jobs and a vital economic injection to the town.

At least 10% of the new homes will be affordable housing dwellings to be built and managed by a tier-1 Community Housing Provider on land gifted free of charge by Sealark.

Last month, the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water approved the West Culburra residential subdivision as a “controlled action” under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 following detailed assessment.

Community consultation for the project commenced in 2013, prior to the lodgement of the concept development application, and has continued since. Sealark anticipates lodging the development application for the main residential subdivision works in the second half of 2025.

Sealark is owned by The Halloran Trust, a registered charity, which was established to fund education, research, community and conservation projects. Sealark also undertakes property management actions to preserve and care for four Biodiversity Stewardship Sites, including the Lake Wollumboola Biodiversity Stewardship Site.

Complete the survey, open until Friday 18 July 2025.
